Who is Outback NSW Tourism? The Outback NSW Regional Tourism Organisation (ORTO) was formed by Tourism New South Wales in 1992 as one of the Regional Tourism Groups of NSW. It is a not-for-profit organisation keyed with the responsibility of working with key tourism industry players in the region and promoting Outback NSW to potential tourists for the economic benefit of the area.
ORTO’s structure is membership based with an industry led Board and is an Incorporated Association. Members include anyone in the tourism industry which has a vested interest in the Outback area’s capacity to increase tourism visitation and expenditure.

“Tourism NSW, a part of the Department of State & Regional Development, provides funding support for Outback NSW Tourism Regional Tourism Organisation through the Regional Tourism Partnership Funding Program”
This membership is voluntary yet brings many benefits of scale to Councils, Incorporated Associations, tourism businesses and individuals that invest in this organisation.
The ORTO activities that are directed by the Board are conducted by the Chief Executive Officer. The ORTO board comprises of an elected Chair and Vice Chair and appointed representatives from the ORTO membership in Outback NSW.
The main objective of ORTO is to;
Work in partnership with its members, regional stakeholders, Tourism New South Wales and Tourism Australia in seeking opportunities to grow visitation and to have greater awareness of OUTBACK NSW in both the domestic and international tourism markets.
As an independent marketing body, ORTO can be of most value to its members by committing its financial and human resources to increasing awareness of the region amongst targeted consumers. The advantage ORTO has is the pooling of funds to reach markets that individual council areas can not afford or achieve on their own.
Hence the following are the Corporate Objectives for ORTO;
- To raise awareness of, and develop interest in the icons, experiences and character of Outback New South Wales both domestically and internationally.
- Increase visitation, length of stay and tourism spend in the areas within Outback NSW
- Increase tourism contribution and/or involvement by the regional communities of Outback NSW.
- To increase the level of participation and/or financial commitment from the Industry in marketing and development activities.
